Influence of Social Media: Little Sally Walker

Today, Reece taught a very useful class for ages 11 and 12. The class alternated between mindful discussions about social media, smart phones and social perception and animated activities such as the mimicking exercise Little Sally Walker. Then followed the collective downloading of the app Kahoot., which got everybody engaged. The questions they had to answered by playing Kahoot revolved around the recognition of celebrities, movies, etc.  The point of the discussion was to bring students' attention to the props and cons of social media and the need to self-regulate its use.

Reece shared the following statement in regards to her lesson:

"It was interesting and strange to be on the other side of today’s lesson. I am definitely not used to teaching or leading a large group of people and I have grown much more aware of my strengths and weaknesses and areas I need to improve upon. I am excited for the opportunity to teach again in the future and look forward to leading dance classes at my studio over the summer. I will definitely be applying the skills and knowledge I’ve learned throughout this course to my future work as a leader and mentor."

Students' Feeback

"The class was really entertaining and got me really engaged. " Keiko Shivers

"Reece’s class was interesting because the subject matter was something that I hadn’t thought of in those terms. It was a bit of an eye opener and the way that she taught was definitely creative and interesting." Camila Chediak

"I really enjoyed today’s class, it is important to realize how social media affects your day to day and life. I believe the older you get the less you use social media as an influence, but younger generations are being affected by social media more than ever. We want to imitate the social standards, whether it’s beauty or materialistic, social media for many has become the Bible to their life and how they you live it." Sara Valbuena

"I enjoyed today’s class. It was about a relevant topic that has affected all of our lives in some way. I liked how we were able to have good discussions about social media and social influence. I liked playing Kahoot, it was different and kept the class interesting." Patricia Victor

"She did a great job."  Jenny Rose

"Reece made a very good discussion and made a good topic very vocal . I liked playing the game because it tested over knowledge, but it was also fun." Jordan Rezman

Suggestions

More boy friendly. The beginning seemed more focused on girl stereotypes and motions.

To incorporate more actual dancing into the lesson.

To manage time so that more movement could be incorporated.

Comments

  1. Looking back, I wish I had incorporated more movement into my lesson. I struggled to think of a way to seamlessly incorporate dance into the lesson, but after hearing everyone's comments and seeing others teach, I think I would have a much easier time figuring something out.

  2. Reece, you did a great job. Sometimes thinking about dance is as valid as dancing.

Variation and Improvisation: Different Means to the Same End

Dance-specific conditions of practice Jordan and Jenny taught students two different ways of body expression. The former through a variation and the latter through improvisation. Both ways contributed to unleash the expression of body shapes and  images in motion.  One follows a preconceived designed based on the teacher's choices of movement, based on a specific music and lyrics. The other recurs to the use of free movement for the students to find their own way of expressing themselves. Both added to the students' repertoire a totally new idea about what dance teaching methodologies can look like. Bellow, there are students' affirmations: " My favorite part about Jordan’s class was how positive she was. Everything from the warm up, which was designed to boost our energy, to her attitude during the combination, was very encouraging. She very clearly got the message across that it is okay if you are not perfect in class, which I think is a great thing t...

Jack and the Beanstalk & Team Work

Camila and Briana brought to class two very different and innovative subjects. Camila use the story Jack and the Beanstalk to stimulate movement choices based on the characters and events of the story. Video Briana, on the other hand created different activities such as the human knot, the shipwreck, Circle and Numbers. Both students demonstrated great creativity in the way they planned and taught their lessons. Human Knot Game
