Sports Dance and Cultural Perspective through Movement

Rawan and Saskia both shared with us lessons on how, topics that may seem unrelated to dance, can become the means by which an educator can foment critical thinking and body expression about dance, but through movement.

RAWAN

Sports Dance Lesson Plan

Age: 7-8 years old
Objective: Students will be able to improvise different sports actions and contribute to group movements relating to a sports theme.


1.      Warm-up

To get familiar with the space you’re going to travel freely around the class
Travel freely in space
1. Using large movements (as far away from each other)
2. Using small movements (as close to each other, but not touching)
                       

Now that you are familiar with the space, lets all move to one side of the room, and form two lines.
I will shout out action words like run, and you will run to the other end of the room

-          Respond to action words- run, jump, skip
Run like a soccer player
Jump like a basketball player
Gallop like a horse
Skip like an Olympian
Walk and throw like a baseball player
Balance like a gymnast
Swing your arms like a tennis player
Punch like a boxer
Now move your arms like a swimmer
Sway like a car racer
Paddle like you’re cycling
           

Now the first activity involves team work, I will divide you into two groups, one group will be watching while the other group acts out a given sports game.

2.      Activity 1: Teamwork
- Divide the class into two groups, one will be watching as the others act out a given sports game. (Soccer, Baseball, Fencing, Wrestling)
- Group 1: Acts the given sports game as a team while the other group guesses the type of sport.

3.      Now the second activity I’m going to put on some music, when the music stops, you will pose into a sports pose, any pose. Now I am going to shout out a level, and you are going to pose according to that level, so if I say high, and you choose to be a basketball player then you should be in a high position by jumping as if you were going to score.


Activity 2: Travel Freely in space, when the music stops, freeze into a sports pose (5 mins)
- Basketball
-Tennis
-Ballerina
-Golf
-Swimming
-Kayaking
-Bowling
-Snowboarding
-Boxing
-Fishing

Suggestions

About Rawan's class, I would’ve used music throughout all of the exercises (the warm up was in complete silence). 

Saskia's explanation of the activity was hard to follow at first, and I know the activity took the entire time, so maybe in a longer class have more activities to do. "

About Saskia: I wish she would have incorporated more dancing.

  2. Both classes were so unique! Teaching sports in a movement class will definitely get boys in the class interested and get them to participate. Also it shows how creative movement doesn't just have to be "dancing." Saskia's lesson was super cool and it is so important to teach children tolerance of other people's lives and perspectives. I think this lesson would be even more interesting with actual children, considering their imaginations are so far-reaching.

Meditation in Motion: Bells, Candles and Music

Today marks the beginning of the teaching season for Methods of Teaching Dance.  Angel Nieves stepped up to the challenge and decided to be the first to teach a dance lesson.  His class revolved around symbolic references to ancient in-motion meditation practices.  His candles signaled the center of the learning community, his Tibetan bells reminded us of balance in sound and the music created an all encompassing mood that further invited to relax and let go of all the stress accumulated through out the semester. The groups affirmations included Angel's choice of music; his modulated voice, the flow of the warm up, his articulate explanation of the subject matter, the interactive eye to eye connective exercise and the layering of hands that brought us all together.
